Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
– Perform maintenance and repairs on City buses and related equipment which may be diesel, gasoline and/or alternative fuel-powered.
– Conduct engine tune-ups and adjustments using diagnostic tools and equipment.
– Execute minor repairs and replace components on buses and related transit equipment.
– Learn and apply techniques for disassembly, reassembly, and preventative maintenance of engines and related systems.
– Diagnose and repair issues with drive train, brakes, suspension, steering, electrical systems, and HVAC components.
– Respond to road calls to perform emergency repairs on buses and related equipment.
– Maintain accurate records of work performed and ensure a clean, organized work area.
– Interpret and follow manuals, schematics, diagrams, and work orders for efficient task completion.
This class is an entry level class in a flexibly-staffed series, incumbents are expected to progress with appropriate training and experience after one (1) year of satisfactory performance to flex to a Bus Mechanic II, the journey level of the class series ($5,507-$6,693).
Duties and schedules may vary by assignment, please inquire about specific duties and/or schedules if called upon for an interview. Incumbents may be required to work any shift; nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. Newly hired incumbents may be assigned to work the night shift. Night shift premium pay ranges from $1.45 to $2.30 per hour.

The current vacancy exists in the Transportation Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list created, with the option of extending that period at the City’s discretion. Should the competitive process be suspended for this recruitment, the eligibility list may be limited to three (3) months.
THE REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list.
Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent GED Completion
AND
One (1) year of full-time paid experience performing routine maintenance and simple repairs on diesel and gasoline powered cars, trucks, buses, construction equipment, and other vehicles and equipment.
Maintenance and simple repairs may include, but are not limited to, the following: performing oil changes, tire rotations, and brake pad replacements; repairing and replacing faulty parts such as engines, transmissions, suspension components, and electrical systems; and using diagnostic equipment to identify problems and determine the best repair technique.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
The work experience section MUST be completed with detailed duties, dates and weekly hours worked for each title held. Please SPECIFY THE TYPE OF MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS AS WELL AS EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS with which you have experience within your duties. Possession of a valid California Driver’s License is required at time of appointment and during the entire term of employment in the job class. Candidates considered for hire will be required to provide proof of a valid driver’s license and a current copy of their driving record.
Within twelve (12) months of appointment, must possess three (3) valid certifications issued by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in the following components: Diesel Engines (H2), Drive Train (H3), and Brakes (H4). Incumbents must take all three (3) certification examinations within the first six (6) months of appointment. Failure to obtain the ASE certifications within twelve (12) months of appointment will be cause for termination from this class.
The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno.
Some positions have been designated as being “safety sensitive” and may require all eligibles offered employment to successfully pass a drug test and/or medical examination prior to employment. Federal law requires that applicants for positions involving the operation of certain transit vehicles, revenue service vehicles, the transportation of hazardous materials, or heavy equipment over 26,001 pounds requiring a commercial driver’s license, must undergo pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment. This classification is subject to random drug and alcohol testing throughout entire term of employment in this class.
This class is a flexibly-staffed series, which requires one (1) year of satisfactory service before an employee can “flex” to the journey level. Employees in classes that require one (1) year of service for flexing will not serve an additional probationary period at the journey level.
A Bus Mechanic I may be promoted to Bus Mechanic II after one (1) year of experience and upon recommendation of the appointing authority and possession of the three (3) above listed H Series ASE certifications.
THE SELECTION PROCESS
The examination process may consist of the following:
WRITTEN EXAMINATION – 100%: The written examination may be conducted online and is designed to assess a candidate’s job related knowledge which may consist of troubleshooting and diagnostic practices and techniques for buses and related transit equipment, skill to properly use hand and power tools and equipment used in transit equipment maintenance and repair, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of assigned duties and other job-related items.
Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.
The written exam is to be determined.
PAY, BENEFITS & WORK SCHEDULE
BENEFITS: UNIT 1 Classification – International Union of Operating Engineers, Stationary Engineers- IUOE (Local 39)
2% Salary Increase, effective December 30, 2024

FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNT: IRS 125 Plan for health and dependent care expenses.
DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Voluntary 457 plan with Fidelity Investments to increase your retirement savings.
VACATION LEAVE: Accrue 8-15 hours per month.
SICK LEAVE: Eight (8) hours per month, available after 90 days.
SUPPLEMENTAL SICK- 40 hours per fiscal year. 80 hours lifetime maximum
HOLIDAYS: Ten (10) City-observed annual holidays plus birthday and two (2) personal days.
SHORT TERM DISABILITY: Provided through California SDI program.
BILINGUAL PREMIUM: PAY: $100 per month
HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT ARRANGEMENT: Eligible retirees can use remaining Sick Leave balance at 80% of hourly rate and other leave balances, if applicable, to reimburse medical insurance and qualified medical expenses, tax free.
RETIREMENT: City of Fresno Retirement Systems, one of the best funded public systems in the state. Reciprocity with other public California systems. Vested in Retirement benefits after 5 years of service. City employees do not participate in Social Security.
DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program): an optional, voluntary program that allows an employee to deposit retirement benefits in a special savings account within the Retirement System while continuing to work for the City of Fresno for up to 10 years. Participation minimum is age 50 and vested. Benefits includes ownership of accumulated funds, compound interest earnings, and alternative distribution options.
