The National Transit Institute (NTI), at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, seeks to hire instructors who can teach a range of topics in our Transit Planning course series (Introduction to Transportation Conformity, Introduction to Transit Service Planning, State and Metropolitan Transportation Programming, Ridership Forecasting, Transit Noise and Vibration etc.) to professionals in the public transit industry. The instructors will present course materials and assist with other requirements related to course instruction.

The National Transit Institute (NTI) was established under the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 to develop, promote, and deliver training and educational programs for the public transit industry. NTI identifies needs and promotes, develops, and delivers high-quality training programs and instructional materials through cooperative partnerships with the federal government, the transit industry, educational institutions, and related associations. 

NTI’s federally funded training programs are offered virtually and in-person by high-skilled course facilitators with industry expertise. NTI course facilitators are responsible for providing effective and engaging learning experiences, virtually and in-person, through the presentation of course materials, leading experiential learning activities, facilitating group discussions, and performing a variety of training administrative functions. NTI course facilitators are also required to leverage their industry knowledge and expertise to serve as a subject matter expert for the development of course content.

Minimum Education and Experience

Candidates must have a minimum of seven years of experience in the public transportation industry; experience facilitating trainings, programs, meetings, etc. in-person and virtually; and experience serving as a subject matter expert in the areas of transit service planning, transportation conformity, ridership forecasting with STOPS, and other organizational practices that ensure compliance with federal requirements. Candidates must also have experience contributing to content development.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The candidate must have a thorough understanding of the operation of public transportation and the delivery of transportation services to the public. Must possess experience in the public transit industry related to public involvement in transportation decision making, the transportation planning process, and state and metropolitan transportation programming. Must be able to clearly communicate and train on federal compliance requirements.

Candidates must possess experience with in-person and virtual facilitation, while utilizing associated tools and best practices, including, but not limited to, virtual platforms (Zoom and MS Teams), experiential learning activities, and classroom management. Candidates should be able to collaborate with course designers as subject matter experts to support the development of course content.

Special Instructions to Applicants

Candidates will participate in a teaching session to ensure they have the skills required to facilitate a course. This can be accomplished during the interview process, virtually or in-person.
