Summary of Job:

Under the direction of the Vehicle Maintenance Manager this position independently performs all modes of maintenance, operation, repairs, and modifications of all transit vehicles and automotive equipment. Responsible for equipment repairs, electric diagnosis, A/C troubleshooting, etc. on transit vehicles and automotive equipment. Knowledge of safety systems on transit vehicles, buses, trolley cars, and automotive equipment. This is a Journeyman position.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Removes, repairs and/or replaces units on Authority’s vehicles in the shop, on the road, or other locations.
  • Inspects, troubleshoots, repairs and replaces all types of components/units as required on transit vehicles and automotive equipment, including but not limited to: cars, light/medium duty trucks fuel pumps, air compressors, water pumps, oil coolers, air valves, fuel lines, etc.
  • Inspects, trouble shoots, and repairs electrical units, including but not limited to diagnosing, removing and replacing electrical/electronic components and making wiring repairs.
  • Troubleshoots, with or without test equipment, various problems encountered with engines and other units affecting vehicle operation; operates jacks, hoists and service/towing equipment; operates drill press, grinders, presses and similar shop equipment.
  • Performs battery maintenance checks; performs soldering, heating and acetylene cutting with Authority supplied equipment on Authority’s vehicles in order to perform the duties of this line of progression.
  • Removes and replaces windows, framing and retainers as required on Authority vehicles.
  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections and minor repairs on vehicles; handles and completes records and paperwork required for work performed.
  • Communicates with co-workers, management, and others in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Conforms with and abides by all regulations, policies, work procedures, and instructions.
  • Conforms to all safety rules and wears/uses all appropriate safety equipment.
  • Performs related work as assigned
  • Responsible for completing all mandatory training classes
  • Responsible for reviewing and complying with all JTA policies, procedures and directives.

Required/ Preferred Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years experience in bus or heavy truck repair; or two (2) year technical school certificate plus two (2) years of bus or heavy truck repair experience. Must possess a current Florida CDL or permit. ASE Certification preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Must able to work different shifts; nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to provide own tools.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the transit system.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, walk, stretch, kneel, and lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in open bays, inside buses and outside in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work with commercial cleaners and toxic materials
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
  • Ability to operate drill press, grinders, presses and similar shop equipment.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.

Physical Demands:

  • Stand for prolonged periods.
  • Perform repetitive motion.
